2011 Vacation Bible School

Seeds are planted all the time:  in a pot, in a garden, in a mind, in a heart…

There are many great gardeners at Northminster, but even those of us who may not have a green thumb plant seeds:  an invitation to visit church,  a prayer with an Anam Cara, a trip to Kolomoki or a visit to Montreat.

As Northminster focuses on the Parable of the Sower in ReNew: The Green VBS, we will focus on planting seeds and caring for creation.  No matter your age, there is an opportunity for you to plant a seed!   Children from 3K to rising 5th graders will complete the ReNew curriculum, while the youth put their faith into action in community service projects.

Adults won’t be left out!  They can choose one of the following classes and be fertile ground for the seeds that will be planted:

CHRISMONS IN JULY - Back by popular demand...Get a bead on your artistic side! The group will create beaded objects as part of a spiritual journey.  The group will look at Celtic symbols, traditional Chrismon shapes, and will explore the various shapes and forms of a labyrinth as their inspiration.

JUST EATING? AN EXPLORATION OF FOOD AND FAITH – Eating can be a mundane activity done with little reflection or thought, or it can be an opportunity to thoughtfully live out our faith and practice justice. Join us as we explore the sacramental character of eating, eating’s ecological and social context, and the economic, moral and theological significance of eating. Discussions will be shaped by the Presbyterian Hunger Program’s “Just Eating?” curriculum and the writings of Duke Divinity School professor Norman Wirzba, and will be guided by Amy Sawyer.

SERVICE THROUGH SCRAPBOOKING - Cut, paste, crop, frame - all for others! Whether you are new to scrapbooking or consider yourself an old pro, come and learn how all these skills can be used for service!

SPIRITUALITY OF CREATION - We believe that God made the heavens and the earth. We also read in Genesis that God called the different parts of creation “good.” Is that goodness and blessing still with us or has creation lost its goodness? Join John Sawyer and the Rev. Deb Bibler on an exploration of God’s creation as seen through Celtic spirituality and the writings of various ancient and modern-day mystics. Be prepared for a new way of looking at the world through the prayer labyrinth, reflection, conversation, and silence.
